Gliding the Blue Vein: A Rafting Tour on the Tuul River

While the Mongolian steppe is synonymous with horseback riding, the Tuul River offers a refreshing, waterborne perspective of the landscape. Flowing from the sacred Khentii Mountains and winding through the heart of Terelj National Park, the Tuul is the lifeblood of the region.

A rafting tour here is less about white-knuckle rapids and more about a "scenic drift"—a peaceful immersion into the rhythm of the river that allows you to see the wilderness from a vantage point unreachable by road.

A Serene Journey Through Terelj.

A typical day trip begins east of Ulaanbaatar, where the river runs wide and clear. As you paddle downstream, the scenery shifts from dramatic granite cliffs to lush willow groves. Because the river is relatively calm (Class I-II), it is accessible to families and first-time rafters.

The real magic lies in the silence; away from the hum of engines, you can hear the splash of a fish or the wind through the tall grass. You’ll drift past nomadic gers tucked into the riverbanks, where massive herds of horses and yaks often descend to the water's edge to drink, barely glancing at the colorful rafts floating by.

The Full Day Experience.

Most rafting tours are expertly combined with other Mongolian essentials. A standard itinerary often includes a stop at the Genghis Khan Statue Complex in the morning, followed by 3 to 4 hours of paddling.

Many tours pause on a secluded riverbank for a traditional Mongolian barbecue (Khorkhog) or a picnic lunch, allowing you to swim in the cool, bracing water or try your hand at archery on the shore. It is a slow-travel experience that perfectly balances adventure with relaxation.

Final Thoughts for Traveling There

The best time for a rafting tour is from late May to mid-September, when the water levels are stable and the weather is warm. Even though the river is gentle, the Mongolian sun is intense at this altitude, and the water reflects it—always wear a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of waterproof sunscreen.

While you won't face extreme rapids, you should expect to get a little wet from paddle splashes, so quick-dry clothing or a spare change of clothes is a must. Rafting the Tuul is the ultimate way to rinse off the dust of the Gobi and experience the "Blue Sky" from the water up.

Program:

Rafting is probably the most exciting of summer leisure sports.

You'll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the river Tuul. It is the most important river for Ulaanbaatar residents. Enjoying the river and experiencing the beautiful nature. You will be served lunch at 13.00 with nomadic people. Back to the Hotel.

This tour includes transport, lunch, and well trained tour guide.

Enjoy!
