Most attractive places of Mongolia, such as Amarbaysgalant Monastery. Amarbaysgalant monastery was established by order of Manju emperor king Enkh- Amgalan Khan, built between ”1727 and 1736” to give respect to his teacher Undur Gegeen Zanabazar.
The monastery consists of over 30 temples. Have you ever been inside a real nomadic lifestyle and culture? This trip gives you only one great chance to visit real Mongolian nomadic families and experience their everyday life, custom and traditions.
Architectural Splendor
What makes Amarbayasgalant unique is its exceptional preservation. Unlike many other Mongolian monasteries that were completely razed during the religious purges of the 1930s, Amarbayasgalant remained relatively intact. Its architecture is a sophisticated fusion of Chinese, Tibetan, and Mongolian styles:
The Main Temple (Tsogchin Dugan): A two-story structure featuring double-tiered roofs and intricate carvings of dragons and floral motifs. It is held together by a complex interlocking wooden system without the use of a single iron nail.
The Symmetrical Layout: The complex follows a rigorous Chinese-influenced symmetrical plan, leading visitors through a series of courtyards toward the most sacred shrines.
A Spiritual Sanctuary
Today, the monastery is a living center of faith. Around 30 to 40 monks reside here, maintaining the ancient traditions of the Gelugpa school. The interior is a treasure trove of Buddhist art, including original silk thangkas, massive statues, and the 108 volumes of the Ganjuur (Buddha's teachings).
Visiting Tips
The monastery is located in a remote, roadless area, making the journey part of the adventure. The surrounding valley is dotted with ancient burial mounds and offers a serene backdrop for the white and red temple walls.
The best time to visit is during the Gongoriin Shambhala ceremony in August, when the monastery comes alive with traditional chanting and rituals.
