The Wild Heart of Mongolia: Terelj and Hustai National Park
For those seeking the quintessential Mongolian wilderness, a journey to Gorkhi-Terelj and Hustai National Park offers the perfect balance of alpine beauty and rare wildlife. Located within striking distance of Ulaanbaatar, these two parks represent the diverse faces of the Steppe.
Gorkhi-Terelj: The Alpine Escape Terelj is a landscape of dramatic granite rock formations, lush larch forests, and wildflower-carpeted meadows. It is most famous for Turtle Rock, a massive natural monument, and the Ariyabal Meditation Temple, which sits perched on a hillside offering panoramic views of the valley.
Terelj is the ideal place for adventure; you can spend your days horse riding through the pine forests or hiking to the hidden glacial Lake Khagiin Khar. Staying in a traditional ger camp here allows you to experience nomadic hospitality under a sky famously known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky."
Hustai: Home of the Golden Spirit. In contrast to the rocky crags of Terelj, Hustai National Park consists of rolling steppe and shrubland. It is globally renowned for the successful reintroduction of the Takhi (Przewalski’s horse), the only true wild horse species remaining in the world. Once extinct in the wild, these majestic, stocky animals now roam freely across the park.
The best time to see them is at dawn or dusk when they descend from the ridges to drink at the streams. Beyond the horses, Hustai is a sanctuary for red deer, marmots, and golden eagles.
Together, these parks provide a profound look at Mongolia’s conservation success and its breathtaking natural heritage. While Terelj offers the scenery, Hustai offers the soul of the wild.
